A non‑invasive, device‑based solution for bowel management.

How Intermittent Colonic Exoperistalsis works

Supporting natural bowel movement through mechanical stimulation

Under normal conditions, bowel movements rely on coordinated muscle contractions – known as peristalsis – to move stool through the colon.

When this movement is reduced or altered, stool progression can slow, leading to difficulty with evacuation and uncomfortable symptoms.

Intermittent Colonic Exoperistalsis (ICE) is a non-invasive way to support this process through external, mechanical stimulation.

What is Intermittent Colonic Exoperistalsis (ICE)?

ICE uses gentle, sequential pressure applied externally along the course of the colon.

This pressure is delivered in a controlled, reproducible pattern designed to support stool movement when natural peristalsis is reduced.

The approach is inspired by clinical abdominal massage techniques, translated into a standardized, device-based format suitable for regular home use.

Inspired by physiological movement patterns

ICE is designed to reflect the natural movement patterns of a healthy colon.

It applies gentle, sequential external pressure along the abdomen, reflecting physiological forces involved in healthy intestinal transit – without entering the body or forcing evacuation.

ICE is intended for daily use. Like natural colonic contractions, stimulation is applied intermittently, once daily for 20 minutes, allowing the bowel to respond naturally. Because the approach is entirely external (“exo”), it does not require rectal access or internal administration. The aim is to support the body’s own movement patterns over time, rather than to artificially trigger or override them.

A non-invasive option within bowel management pathways

ICE is intended as a non-invasive, device-based option within bowel management.

It may be considered when conservative measures alone do not provide sufficient relief, or when a patient or clinician is seeking a non-invasive approach.

ICE can be used as part of an overall bowel management plan and does not preclude other options if additional support is needed.

Bowel management often follows a stepwise approach, moving from conservative and non‑invasive options to more interventional solutions when needed.

ICE is designed as a non‑invasive, device‑based option within this continuum.

To deliver Intermittent Colonic Exoperistalsis in a consistent and reproducible way, ICE is administered using the MOWOOT system.
